ELAA: Carrier January volumes peak on Asia-Europe routes

CONTAINER volumes from the Far East to Europe rose in January to the highest monthly figure since the economic crisis 18 months ago at 1.126 million TEU higher than the spike in westbound monthly figures in December 2009, according to the European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA).
The capacity rise accounts for seven per cent of overall trade and could turnaround the gains made in rising freight gains, said Paris-based newsletter Alphaliner.
If capacity keeps at the month-to-month surge in January to February totalling 52,000-TEU growth on the routes could hit 10 per cent for the year, the report added
