GERMANY`s Schenker (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd has opened its first ever IT Shared Services Centre (SSC) at the Jiangsu Software Park in Nanjing, the company has announced.
The centre occupies 15,000 square feet and will primarily pool IT functions such as application development, maintenance, application operations, information and communication technology infrastructure and help desk, for the DB Schenker Asia Pacific.
The EUR1.5 million (US$2.04) investment in the centre is expected to yield a return in three years through greater cost efficiencies and economies of scale, the company said.
"To compete in the long run, companies need to constantly assess and adjust their IT strategy and thus ensure meaningful investments in technology, infrastructure and process improvements," said Schenker group CIO Peter Schumann.
Mr Schumann added that the centre has the potential to become a pilot for global use to deliver more efficient and standardised processes based on global standards.
Said Asia Pacific CEO Steve Dearnley: "We are constantly looking at ways to improve our efficiency and this is an innovative example. We are optimistic that it will provide a greater competitive advantage for us and indirectly to our customers, as we calibrate a more robust and responsive IT Services structure."
