AIRBRIDGECARGO Airlines (ABC), a unit of Russia`s Volga-Dnepr Group, recently flew 1,275 pigs - each one 45 kilos, the weight of a slight 5`4` adult - from Montreal to Vladivostok in a 747 which normally seats 467 passengers.
Previous shipments safely delivered by ABC include rare Akhal-Teke horses for breeding from Russia to China, 105 show horses from Amsterdam to Moscow, 380 breeding cows from Melbourne to Kazan in Russia as well as racehorses, walruses, dolphins, grizzlies and polar bears, elephants, great sturgeons and a whale.
The pigs are to improve the breeding stock at the Vladivostok agricultural centre, the largest such centre in Primorsky Kray. They arrived after a 13-hour flight during which correct temperature and conditions were maintained to ensure the wellbeing of the animals.
Last year, following the project to transport cows from Melbourne, ABC was awarded full accreditation for livestock transport into and out of Australia and Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) stations at all Australian airports were notified of the airline`s compliance with requirements for the safe air transportation of livestock.
