SOUTHEASTERN China`s port of Xiamen handled 89,700 TEU of international transshipments in the first three quarters of this year, an increase of 10.8 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year, Xinhua reported.
During the third quarter, the port handled 65,300 TEU of international transshipments. The monthly throughput in August even set a historical high by reaching 28,200 TEU. In September, the port handled 22,400 TEU, a surge of 73.3 per cent over the same month a year ago.
Xiamen`s international transshipment throughput is estimated to exceed 100,000 TEU by the end of this year.
In the first half of year, the port`s international transshipment throughput plunged 39.7 per cent year on year to only 24,300 TEU due to weak market demand.
In order to survive the economic downturn, the city government has introduced measures to encourage carriers takes Xiamen as transshipment hub.
