CONTAINER volume through the Port of New York and New Jersey fell 18.8 per cent in June as an accelerating export declines offset a small import increase, said a port authority report.
Laden container imports fell 15.6 per cent in June year on year while increasing 2.5 per cent in June from May, the third month of consecutive import increases coming to 186,985 TEU, the highest number of laden import boxes the port has experienced any month this year.
But exports fell 22.9 per cent in June, the sharpest year-on-year decline since February as laden export boxes fell 4.2 per cent May to June.
Thus, overall laden container traffic at port authority terminals was down 17.1 per cent year on year in the first half. Imports, which make up more than 60 per cent of the port authority`s container business, were off 14.4 per cent.
